Word Order

  • Relative pronoun comes at the beginning
  • Verb goes to the end of the relative clause

    • Main clause + , + Relative Pronoun + ... + Verb

    Examples by Case

    Nominativ (subject of relative clause):

  • Der Mann, der dort steht, ist mein Vater.
  • Die Frau, die singt, ist berühmt.

    • Akkusativ (object of relative clause):

  • Das Buch, das ich lese, ist interessant.
  • Der Film, den wir gesehen haben, war gut.

    • Dativ (indirect object):

  • Die Frau, der ich helfe, ist meine Nachbarin.
  • Der Mann, dem ich das Buch gebe, ist Lehrer.

    • With Prepositions

    Preposition + Relative Pronoun:

  • Die Stadt, in der ich wohne, ist schön.
  • Der Stift, mit dem ich schreibe, ist blau.

    Der Mann, der dort sitzt, ist mein Chef.

    The man who sits there is my boss.

    Das Auto, das ich kaufen möchte, ist teuer.

    The car that I want to buy is expensive.

    Die Freunde, mit denen ich reise, sind nett.

    The friends with whom I travel are nice.

    Das Restaurant, in dem wir essen, ist bekannt.

    The restaurant in which we eat is famous.
