Indirect Speech (Indirekte Rede)

Indirect speech is used to report what someone else said.

Basic Structure

Reporting verb + dass + ... + Verb (at end)

Direct: Er sagt: "Ich bin müde."

Indirect: Er sagt, dass er müde ist.

Reporting Verbs

  • sagen (to say)
  • erzählen (to tell)
  • meinen (to think/mean)
  • behaupten (to claim)
  • fragen (to ask)

    • Without "dass"

    You can omit "dass" - then normal word order:

  • Er sagt, er ist müde.
  • Sie meint, das Buch ist gut.

    • Questions in Indirect Speech

    Yes/No Questions: Use ob

  • Direct: "Kommst du morgen?"
  • Indirect: Er fragt, ob ich morgen komme.

    • W-Questions: Keep the question word

  • Direct: "Wo wohnst du?"
  • Indirect: Sie fragt, wo ich wohne.

    • Konjunktiv I (Formal)

    In formal writing, Konjunktiv I is used:

  • Er sagt, er sei krank. (instead of: ist)
  • Sie meint, das stimme nicht. (instead of: stimmt)

    • For everyday speech, indicative is fine:

  • Er sagt, er ist krank.

    • Examples / Beispiele

    Er sagt, dass er morgen kommt.

    He says that he is coming tomorrow.

    Sie meint, das Wetter wird besser.

    She thinks the weather will get better.

    Er fragt, ob ich Zeit habe.

    He asks if I have time.

    Sie will wissen, wo ich wohne.

    She wants to know where I live.
