Negation (Verneinung)

German has two main ways to negate: nicht and kein.

Kein/Keine/Keinen

Use kein to negate nouns with indefinite articles (ein/eine) or no article:

  • Ich habe ein Auto. → Ich habe kein Auto.
  • Sie hat eine Schwester. → Sie hat keine Schwester.

    • Nicht

    Use nicht to negate:

  • Verbs: Ich verstehe nicht.
  • Adjectives: Das ist nicht gut.
  • Nouns with definite articles: Ich kaufe nicht das Auto.
  • Adverbs: Er kommt nicht heute.

    • Position of Nicht

  • At the end for general negation: Ich verstehe nicht.
  • Before adjectives: Das Wetter ist nicht schön.
  • Before prepositional phrases: Ich gehe nicht ins Kino.
  • Before specific words being negated: Ich trinke nicht Kaffee, sondern Tee.

    Ich habe kein Geld.

    I have no money.

    Das ist nicht richtig.

    That is not correct.

    Er hat keine Zeit.

    He has no time.

    Ich verstehe nicht.

    I don't understand.

    Sie kommt heute nicht.
